The Green Room

close call

Boy was I cranky yesterday! Mostly because I realized that due to wedding festivities, there will be no Fourth of July celebration for me this year. Many people might not be bothered by this, but they're probably not from America's Hometown, where Fourth of July is THE event of the year. You haven't experienced Independence Day right until you've been to the National Tom Sawyer Days. Seriously. Fence painting, frog jumping (I won a trophy when I was five), mud volleyball, crafts fair, Hannibal Cannibal race, crowning of the new Tom and Becky to top it off. And did I mention the parade and fireworks?

I'm sure other places, including the Birthplace of America, can put on a good show for my third favorite holiday (following Christmas and Easter, of course). But I won't be finding out this year.

My brother-in-law and future-sister-in-law are classy, so no cutesy Fourth theme. I was all ready to complain about wearing a purple dress instead of a red white and blue tank top, drinking champagne instead of HHS Booster Club freshly made lemonade, seeing their high school friends instead of my own, and just completely missing any parades or fireworks or Tom Sawyerness. Then I realized I was being completely selfish! As if my husband's entire family needed to give in to my craving for patriotic celebrations instead of celebrating this huge event in their life! And we are going back there next weekend, so it's not like I have to wait long to get my MO family fix. So I apologize for all my selfishness and am now putting on a happy happy face for the weekend, because it really is going to be a great time.

And to those of you who aren't 1000 miles away, and who may possibly get to enjoy the festivities, have a lemonade for me!
